New role for Tricia Carey
Textile industry veteran Tricia Carey has landed a new position as chief commercial officer of Avalo. The North Carolina-based company harnesses machine learning to commercialise what is described as ‘impactful crop traits’ faster and more affordably compared to conventional breeding or gene editing. The company was founded in 2019 by Brendan Collins (CEO), Mariano Alvarez (CSO) and Rebecca White (COO).

For the past two years, Avalo has been scaling up a cotton programme in the Texas Panhandle, a region where farmers have suffered from decreased water availability and high fertiliser costs, it said. It has been working on a Low-Input cotton strain that requires no irrigation and uses up to 30% less fertiliser.

“I’m thrilled to join Avalo and be part of an exceptional team that’s pioneering innovative solutions at the intersection of agriculture, technology and textiles. Avalo’s machine-learning platform accelerates plant evolution in a ground-breaking new way, enabling us to bring more sustainable and efficient products to market faster and cheaper than ever before. This is an exciting moment for Avalo, and I’m energized by the opportunity to contribute to the company’s vision of making our global agriculture more sustainable, resilient and equitable,” commented Ms Carey.
