YKK switches to low-carbon aluminium

Zips, trims and accessories group YKK Corporation is switching to low-carbon aluminium as the source for all aluminium alloy wire procured for zips to help reach its target in YKK Sustainability Vision 2050.
By that year, it plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared with full year 2018 and reach “climate neutrality”.
It is working with fellow Japanese companies, aluminium material manufacturers Sumitomo Electric Industries and Sumitomo Electric Toyama to source low-carbon aluminium, made using renewable energy as the power source, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to using electricity generated from fossil fuels.
Terry Tsukumo, vice-president of product strategy for sales at YKK, said: “YKK has been promoting efforts to use recycled materials and plant-based materials in textile materials for zippers and to increase the ratio of such materials. In addition to these efforts, we will promote the use of low-carbon aluminum made from renewable energy sources, such as hydropower.”
