OCA event confirms progress in sustainable cotton growing in Pakistan

24/11/2025
The Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA) held a first stakeholder event in Pakistan last week. The Amsterdam-based organisation began working with Pakistani farmers in 2022. It has projected that during the 2025-2026 season its programme will have supported more than 10,000 organic cotton farmers covering nearly 60,000 hectares of land in Baluchistan, Punjab and Sindh. Production of cotton lint for the season is expected to grow to some 16,000 metric tonnes. OCA said that Pakistan presents significant untapped potential for organic cotton thanks to its suitable climate, arable land, and a strong textile industry seeking to use more sustainable raw materials.

The event brought together local actors as OCA pursues its mission to provide farmers with access to non-genetically modified seed, agronomic and financial training as well as support to access markets. It has supported the introduction of digital tools to help farmers make better-informed decisions as well as improve data collection and transparency.

With Pakistan subject to recurring floods and other climate-related shocks, OCA believes its work supports farmers in adopting practices that improve soil health, reduce their dependency on synthetic inputs, and increase long-term resilience.

This event was sponsored by local companies, including Soorty Enterprises and testing organisation Tti along with Artistic Milliners, Control Union Pakistan and MG Apparel.
