Hilfiger and Fashion for Good back Spinnova’s consortium
Tommy Hilfiger has joined Spinnova’s consortium, which aims to scale up demand for its wood-based fibre.
In June, Spinnova’s chief executive, Janne Poranen said the production costs were "currently too high” but that scaling would help to bring them down.
At the time, it acquired full ownership of the assets that it set up in 2021 with former business partner Suzano. These include a demo factory.
Fashion for Good is also working with Spinnova to help build a consortium.
Katrin Ley, managing director at Fashion for Good, said: “The consortium model Spinnova is building represents exactly the kind of coordinated ecosystem approach that next-generation materials need to scale. This isn't just about proving technology works, but about building the infrastructure and capability across the value chain that makes adoption viable.”
Based in Finland, Spinnova has developed a technology for making textile fibre out of wood pulp or waste, such as leather, textile, or agricultural cropping waste, without harmful chemicals.
