They discuss the evolution of the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the world’s largest. It is located in the Great Plains and extends across eight states, including the Texas High Plains, where farmers depend on irrigation to grow cotton.
The conversation covers soil health, irrigation technology, forage systems, and how integrating cotton, cattle and crop rotation can reduce water use while improving long-term farm viability. It also looks into the disconnect between how brands talk about water, and how rarely they ask where their cotton’s water actually comes from.
Next week, Jeansland will release the second episode of this water series. It will cover work happening on the ground, the farmer-led research behind it, the endowment that keeps it going, and what brands can do to make a difference. The conversation also zooms out to discuss other major water users, including AI and energy.
It is another insightful look into a little-known facet of the denim industry.
