Sizes 00 to 40: Erdem x Universal Standard
An eight-piece capsule collection recently released by London-based luxury label Erdem in collaboration with US size-inclusive fashion brand Universal Standard features denim pieces which range in size from 00 to 40.
The capsule matches Erdem’s ultra-feminine silhouettes with Universal Standard’s minimal aesthetic, delivering not only denim (in a range of blue hues, as well as white), but also floral pieces.
Erdem founder and designer, Erdem Moralioglu, commented: “So much of my work is about narrative and story, things that aren’t necessarily utilitarian. The beauty of Universal Standard is that it is accessible to so many people; it truly is universal.
“It’s utilitarian in a chic way. There is a straightforwardness to the language of the brand that I thought was so interesting to apply to my world.”
Though Erdem showed petal-flecked denim jeans as part of its pre-fall 2021 collection, the partnership represents the brand’s first full-on foray into the category.
Co-founder and creative director at Universal Standard, Alexandra Waldman, elaborated on her brand’s creative ethos: “We were there [throughout the design process] to speak to the sizing and grading, those aspects that we’ve gained so much experience with. The whole reason we’re in this space is to show the industry that [inclusive fashion] is not just possible, but it’s possible to do it beautifully.
“I’m starting to sort of turn away from the term inclusivity and move towards the term equality, because giving women the opportunity to have these beautiful clothes should be an even playing field type of situation. Ultimately, this is about access and dignity.”
