Von Dutch's Earl Pickens on design today at Denim PV

Fashion industry veteran and current collection director at Von Dutch, Earl Pickens, opened Première Vision (PV)’s Digital Denim Week with a documentary-style video presentation covering his perspectives on denim and design.

“Denim is part of our life, from cotton to culture,” Mr Pickens said early on in the video. “There’s water, because the body needs it; there’s denim, because fashion needs it.”

He described his creative process as one of “always” looking in the streets, from its codes to its languages - and even its emojis.

Mr Pickens also said that he tends to work in capsule collections today, “never” making more than 10 denim articles per collection. “We work really quickly, so I am working on the next three months and not next year,” he explained.

Notably, the designer revealed that he never orders (or reorders) fabrics for Von Dutch. Instead, with sustainability in mind, the brand works with what has already been produced. “How do we survive on that? We just keep using things that exist. There’s so much out there.”
