Y2K, luminarie and fatto a mano inspire D&G at MMFW

Milan-headquartered luxury fashion and leathergoods brand Dolce and Gabbana (D&G) recently showed its spring-summer 2022 menswear collection at Milan men’s fashion week (MMFW).

The showcase drew considerable inspiration from the blingy, oft-bedazzled early 2000s (“Y2K”) aesthetic, as well as the traditional Italian art form of luminarie, most often manifested as colourful lights covering churches in networked artworks in the south of the country.

The concept of fatto a mano - or the handmade - was also emphasised, in a collection tagged as #DGLightTherapy on social media.

Denim featured prominently in the presentation, ripped and torn and in various hues of black and indigo washes, which co-designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana covered in bright, elaborate crystal embroidery to reflect both the Y2K era and luminarie art (pictured, look 89).

On its website, the brand described the collection as “a celebration of light and colour, a dialogue between tradition and contemporaneity.”
