Kontoor brand partners provide indigo dyeing data
Tracing materials in the apparel supply chain is making progress, slowly but surely, but keeping a tab on chemicals is quite another matter.

In a move to improve the industry’s understanding of the impact of indigo dyeing processes, Kontoor Brands is working with key partners to provide critical data that is not currently incorporated into the Higg Material Sustainability Index (MSI). This index, operated by Higg Co, is one of the few tools the industry has that provides data on the impacts of the materials used in apparel and footwear. “The Higg MSI was designed to evolve as new data becomes available,” said Jeremy Lardeau, VP Higg Index at the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.

Arvind Limited, based in India, and Cone Denim, in the US, will be providing data on the denim dyeing process that will be added to the Higg MSI. It is expected that apparel brands will have access to the updated information during the summer of 2022.

This work will enable the industry to “have a more complete picture of denim's impact,” said Kontoor Brands head of innovation, sustainability and product development Dhruv Agarwal. A position echoed by Cone Denim president Steve Maggard who welcomes “the opportunity to collaborate with likeminded companies, such as Kontoor, to bring transparency to the supply chain.”
