Pakistan: more cotton grown on less land

05/07/2022
According to the Pakistan Economic Survey, a report released by the country’s ministry of finance each year, local cotton production grew by an estimated 17.9% to around 8.3 million bales over the 2021-2022 fiscal year.

Cotton ginning also increased by 9.2% during the period.

The double-digit rise in cotton growing was tied to factors such as favourable weather conditions, improved crop management and attractive cotton prices both at home and abroad, the ministry said.

A 6.8% decrease in total cropped area was observed, however, which was linked to a wider trend of decline over the past decade "or so", as cotton cultivation has reportedly proven less attractive to growers than competing crops, including sugarcane, maize, potato and rice.

Pakistan is today the fifth-largest cotton producer in the world, the survey noted, with cotton and textile exports representing approximately 60% of the country’s total.
