Natural dyes make their mark in Taiwan shortlist

The Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF) has drawn up a list of 12 finalists for the 2022 Taiwan Fashion Design Awards, an international competition that, this year, attracted more than 400 entries from 17 countries, although 10 of the finalists are from Taiwan, with two from China.

Inspiration for the entries had come from the environment, technology and past fashion trends, TTF said. Entries also reflected culture, travel and public health in the post-pandemic period, it added.

Several designers used coffee grounds, turmeric, curcuma longa, tea leaves and natural "blue dye" to make organic pigments for fabric dyeing. Others still harnessed super-elastic fibres and three-dimensional (3D) printing. Standout entries included exaggerated 3D constructions, adjustable designs and ideas such as "body packaging".

The winner will be announced in October during the Taipei fashion week.
