The enterprises will work together to open up access to vocational training, leadership programmes, mentorship, health and financial education, plus introduce the women to e-commerce, all with a view to encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset among them. It is hoped that, after further training and exposure, the community will feel empowered to sell their handiwork online, Soorty said.
The project falls under the denim producer’s Soorty Organic Cotton Initiative (SOCI), which it launched in Naal last year. Through its ties to the Organic Cotton Accelerator, the company is already invested in supporting local families, but said it felt that “more needs to be done to support growth and free enterprise for the region’s females”.
Soorty added that it is looking forward to receiving its second harvest of certified in-conversion cotton from Naal’s farmers, roughly 1,000 of which are engaged in the SOCI scheme, later this year.
