Neela Denim, a division of Pakistan-based Sapphire Fibres, presented novel denim fabrics engineered to offer enhanced comfort or sustainability at Kingpins in Amsterdam last month.

The mill’s Plush denim fabrics target post-Covid demand for ultra soft and comfy jeans. “These fabrics are made from a long staple cotton fibre that is especially soft,” Zeeshan Ali, Neela Blue’s marketing & product development manager told Inside Denim. A special finish is applied to form a particularly lush and soft weft, which will be worn next to the skin. These features are permanent, and the fabric gets softer with each wash, the company said.

Neela Blue is also experimenting with novel natural fibres, and showed a banana fibre denim fabric on its booth (pictured). “This is a very sustainable fibre as it is drawn from a waste material,” said Mr Ali. The fabric on display is made from a blend of 91% cotton, 8% banana fibre and 1% Lycra. The properties of banana fibre are said to include strength, fineness, shine, good moisture management and biodegradability.

Neela Blue is also betting on an athleisure or even activewear trend in denim and is developing denim fabrics with cooling properties or more comfortable stretch features.
