Progress for pineapple fibre
Ananas Anam, the makers of Piñatex, a leather-like non-woven made from pineapple fibres and PLA, is making progress in the development of a pineapple yarn. Tests of fabrics woven with Piñayarn have been conducted by Spanish mill Santanderia, and were on show at Première Vision last month (pictured).

Piñayarn is made from pineapple waste that farmers usually either burn or leave in the ground to rot. The development of Ananas Anam’s product range could thus be a source of new revenues for growers. The company says it sources this form of biomass from small communities as well as large corporations.

The raw material, which is sourced in Africa, South America and Asia, is sent to Spain where it is spun, in an intimate blend of 70% Tencel and 30% Piñatex. A cellulosic material, it has a dry hand, it is believed to be biodegradable. But it is also a premium material, whose price would be between that of linen and organic cotton, the company said.
