A new ‘bio-active’ bleaching & dyeing solution for cotton
Fibre 52, a company based in Houston, Texas and a division of Innovo Fiber, has announced the release of a patent-pending technology for bleaching and dyeing of cotton that it intends to license.

Using what the company describes as a “bio-active” product, it said that it can pre-process cotton using 50% less water and energy and reducing cycle time by up to two hours. Fibre52’s dye technology is said to conserve cotton’s natural properties and add new performance features including the ability to wick moisture away from the skin.

In tests overseen by North Carolina State University (NCSU) and SGS, cotton processed using Fibre52’s technology was found to deliver low pilling, improved tear strength and shorter drying times. These properties could make Fibre52 cotton a possible natural alternative to synthetic performance fibres.

Fibre52 president Laura Thornquist commented: “Fibre52’s patent-pending technology combines the comfort of cotton with strength properties and moisture-management performance much better than poly-anything does, so you can be comfortable in a wider range of temperatures.” She added that it is an “inexpensive, eco-friendly alternative technology” that uses current machinery and does not require any change in dye recipes.
