Pangaia readies 100% Nucycl denim for retail

An oversized denim jacket made from 100% Nucycl lyocell fibre, produced from pre- and post-consumer cotton by regenerative textiles developer Evrnu, is set to be released via casualwear company Pangaia’s rebranded Pangaia Lab ideas hub on February 16.

Evrnu debuted its first commercially available lyocell made solely from cotton textile waste, 100% Nucycl r-lyocell, which is recyclable up to 10 times, last April.

Pangaia has previously launched Candiani-made PANettle selvedge, manufactured from a blend of Himalayan nettle fibre and cotton, plus PANhemp hemp-cotton denims in partnership with Orta mill and on-demand jeanswear specialists Unspun.

“Our other denim products have had to be blended with cotton,” Pangaia’s chief innovation officer, Dr Amanda Parkes, said of what sets this latest collaboration apart in conversation with Vogue Business. A denim jacket made solely from Nucycl therefore represents "a breakthrough on the technological front," she explained.

Back in December, Evrnu debuted two shirts and a pair of wide-leg trousers alongside fashion brand Zara. The two tops were made of 100% Nucycl lyocell, whereas the trousers contained 31% of the fibre.

Production is expected to commence at the company's new South Carolina recycling plant by mid-2024, which will have capacity for 17,000 tonnes of recycled fibre in its first year. According to its co-founder and chief executive, Stacy Flynn, partners have already committed to purchasing approximately half of the this initial volume.

Nucycl was named among Time’s ‘best inventions’ of 2022 in November.
