Collaborative effort in favour of circularity

Södra, a Swedish cooperative of forest owners, has been working on the development of OnceMore, a cellulosic pulp made from a combination of wood and cellulose from used textiles since 2016. It has made new progress in this endeavour thanks to a partnership with Lenzing set up in 2021. Lenzing’s Refibra Technology is also based on a blend of pulp from wood and from waste textiles. The companies had announced that they would be sharing their knowledge and that the “jointly developed” pulp OnceMore would then be used as a raw material to make Tencel x Refibra. The partners had further announced at the time that the goal was to process 25,000 tonnes of textile waste yearly by 2025.
Södra announced today that it has scaled up production of OnceMore pulp and that it will be used to make Tencel x Refibra branded fibre that Swedish ecofashion label Philipa K will feature in its Spring/Summer 2024 collection. The yarn and fabric are to be manufactured by Portugal-based Riopele.
Filippa K head of sustainability Jodi Everding commented on the collaborative effort: “It’s important to us at Filippa K to join forces with like-minded partners who are innovators in their own fields.”
