Austria-based producer Lenzing has entered into the initial phase of a new mechanical fibre recycling project for “denim circularity".

The initiative centres on its Tencel brand of wood-based lyocell and involves global mill partners Canatiba (Brazil), Artistic Milliners (Pakistan) and Textil Santanderina (Spain), who will each make denim fabrics from pre-consumer fibre waste verifiable via Lenzing’s own traceability technology.

Mechanically recycled Tencel lyocell appeals due to its “close-to-cotton” qualities and ability to retain core properties such as breathability, comfort and a smooth drape, its manufacturer explained.

“Considering the high tenacity of Tencel lyocell fibres, there is an edge to increase recycled content while producing higher quality fabrics,” expanded director of research, product and trend at Artistic Milliners, Baber Sultan.

“The [recycled] fabric has so much potential across markets, especially with the nostalgia around Y2K and other vintage looks," he continued, adding that neppy and salt and pepper effects in particular "really bloom with mechanically recycled lyocell fibres".
