EMF publishes 2021-2023 Jeans Redesign progress

UK circular economy charity Ellen Macarthur Foundation (EMF) has released its 2021-2023 insights report for the Jeans Redesign project, first initiated in 2019 as a roadmap for eco-responsible apparel producers.
Now boasting 100 participants in total, key takeaways include how 72% of value chain partners were able to make Redesign-approved denim fabrics and jeanswear over the period, with more than 1.5 million pairs of “redesigned” jeans brought to market in 2023 alone. This figure represents a three-fold increase on the volume reported for 2021.
EMF added that its partners had already managed to take the amount of post-consumer recycled content used in blends to 87%, although limiting the proportion of non-cellulosic fibres to just 2% remains a technical challenge. This is especially the case when it comes to making stretch denims with appropriate durability.
On what’s next, the organisation’s fashion initiative lead, Jules Lennon, said “it’s [now] time to step up the pace and scale of progress”.
