The “carbon-neutral” jeans in question are a five-pocket design washed using "advanced" frontloading machines and finished with laser technology after first passing through a pre-dying hanger system and energy-saving drying machines, the manufacturer said. On-site solar electricity also contributed to the effort, while carbon offsetting in support of Nicaraguan reforestation similarly came into play for “residual emissions”.
Foshan-based supplier Advance Denim, located over the border with Guangdong province, provided the mill with its fabrics and local producer Li Wai Metal Manufactory created specially made shank buttons.
HKQAA verified Crystal Denim’s cradle-to-gate lifecycle assessment and carbon accounting methods for the jeans, all of which fall under the latter's eco-minded Good by Design product development umbrella. Its group-wide commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 were also acknowledged by the non-profit in the form of an award.
Assistant general manager for sales and business development at Crystal Denim, Miles Lam, described the achievement as a first step. The mill is now looking forward to developing “more net-zero products” alongside brand and supply chain partners in the future, he said.
Crystal Denim celebrated making more than 230,000 pairs of jeans to circular-economy charity Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign guidelines last year. The division also began sharing its fabric and finishing technologies digitally by way of a partnership with Browzwear’s VStitcher 3D design platform earlier this month.
