Genova Jeans extends the celebrations

Genova Jeans Week, a celebration of the birthplace of jeans, is under way in the Italian city of Genoa, having has extended its duration to add in more events (October 1 to 6).

Since the mid-16th century, a durable cotton fabric, fustian, was produced in Genoa, mostly dyed with indigo from the East. This fabric was loaded onto ships bound for England. The city of origin was marked on the packaging, and the English terms Jeanes, Jeane, and Jean eventually evolved into ‘jeans’.

The event encompasses art, fashion, music, business and craftsmanship, with a ‘Jeans Trail’ - a route through the heart of the old town - animated by artistic installations, exhibitions and blue shop windows.

Alongside talks, conferences and meetings, organisers will host workshops and offer guided tours to enable visitors to learn about Genoese handicrafts.

Exhibitions will take place in spaces including BUGe (university library), MEI-Museum of Italian Emigration, Museo Mazziniano, Palazzo Grillo and Diocesan Museum.

Ian Berry’s denim artwork Portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi will be on show at Risorgimento Museum.

Supply chain companies will take part in an expo, and guests will enjoy a cocktail party and Jeans Party.

Inside Denim will report more from Genoa over the coming days.
