Arte Jeans: Denim canvas provides healing and inspiration

During Genova Jeans Week, the Museo Diocesano provided the venue for a celebration of Arte Jeans, a project that celebrates the city’s links with art and jeans.

The museum is home to the Teli della Passione – the 16th century Passion of Christ from the Abbey of San Nicolò del Boschetto, composed of 14 canvases dyed with indigo and painted with white lead.

In 2018, tragedy struck the city when a bridge collapsed in a storm, killing 43 people. Francesca Centurione Boschieri, an ambassador for Genoa, told Inside Denim she believed the people needed art to help heal. Some of Italy's most prominent artists heeded the call and donated pieces created on Candiani-supplied denim canvases to the city, with the first exhibition launched in 2021.

A permanent space for the Museum of Jeans is planned for a building on the waterfront, according to organisers, with new artworks added each year.
