Water preservation top of mind for Vicunha
Brazilian denim mill Vicunha recently invested in a new wastewater treatment plant, part of a public-private project. This allows the company to use a higher proportion of recycled water and return clean residual water to the environment in the three facilities it owns in the northeast of the country.

Vicunha’s focus on reducing water consumption extends to denim-making processes such as foam dyeing and finishing and ultrasound technologies used for dyeing, washing and impregnation (on both yarns and fabrics). Denim fabrics made using these lower impact processes are a part of the mill’s Re-Water ranges.

“Since the launch of the Vicunha Water Footprint project, which measured total water consumption throughout the lifecycle of a pair of jeans in Brazil, to the creation of the Re-Water line, we have directed resources and efforts to develop innovative and effective projects that promote increasingly sustainable production and generate a positive impact on our surroundings,” commented Vicunha marketing manager German Alejandro.

In 2023, the mill said it saved over 220 million litres of water. It has announced plans to upgrade infrastructure at its facility in Maracanaú, as it has done for the one in Pacajús.

The collection for spring-summer 2026, presented at Kingpins last week, further highlights the company’s anchoring in the region with a capsule collection created by local fashion designer Lindebergue Fernandes (pictured).
