With Calvin Klein Brazil, the denim mill has entered into a partnership to recycle the brand’s unsold stock of T-shirts. So far, it says, 4,000 T-shirts have been upcycled into new denim fabrics. The RecyCKle denim fabric is made from 72.4% standard certified cotton and 27.6% defibred cotton, which is certified Global Recycled Standard (GRS).
On this partnership, Vicunha CMO German Alejandro commented: “At Vicunha, we approach sustainability from many angles. We increasingly invest in new projects that make our industry more responsible and sustainable. The partnership with Calvin Klein enables us to study and create new possibilities to expand circularity in our industry, which is part of our DNA.”
The company has also announced plans to open a V.Laundry innovation centre later this year. Located in the state of Ceará, where Vicunha was founded and currently operates its largest denim mill, V.Laundry will allow brands and partners to test new developments and prototype models on conventional and modern equipment, it says. The innovation centre is designed to save time and raw materials, bringing more agility and sustainability to denim manufacturing. Though based in Latin America, V.Laundry will service all countries where Vicunha is active, including the Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain.
