Honours for Lab Denim co-founder

16/12/2025
Dr. Mickael Mheidle, chairman, chief scientist and co-founder of Lab Denim, Inc., earned the Innovation & Technology Prize from the Institut de France. The prestigious cultural and scientific institution that was founded in 1795 recognises the value of Dr Mheidle’s patented algae-based denim colouring technique. The indigo-free, post–weave colourisation technology (PWC), otherwise known as printing, leads to significant water savings, as it bypasses both the indigo dyeing and jeans laundering processes.

The Swiss company founded in 2024 said its method requires less than 20 grammes of water per pair of jeans and the chemistry used to colour the fabric is 100% biobased.

Before founding Lab Denim, Dr. Mheidle had established Swiss Performance Chemicals, a developer of textile printing and ink solutions, and co-founded Beyond Surface Technologies, headed by Matthias Foessel, which specialises in bio and algae-based chemistry for textiles. Both entrepreneurs had worked for Swiss chemicals company Ciba in the past.

In addition, the Swiss-French scientist is also known for his work on DReAM, an early digital textile printing machine, developed in collaboration with Reggiani and Scitex Vision/Hewlett Packard.

With Trium Technology, another venture he is involved in, he is working on the development of fluorine-free water repellent solutions.
