Trompe-l’oeil digital print denim
The uncanny authenticity of high definition digitally printed ‘denim’ was a key feature at several mills and manufacturers exhibiting at PV Denim this week. Designers appear to be embracing the technology to create striking trompe-l’oeil effects with printed chains, patches and various forms of ornamentation and wear.

This was the case at Next Printing, the printing division of Italian accessories maker ACM, which has called on Federico Barengo, founder of the brand Garment Workshop, to design a capsule collection. Mr Barengo chose a selection of products from his own archives, had their markings scanned and reproduced via digital print. “What I love about denim is its rich history, each detail has a story to tell,” he told Inside Denim. The digital print ‘artefacts’ made with Next Printing consume only 3 litres of water per item, instead of the 40 to 60 litres of water used to make and fade jeans conventionally, or the years of wear and tear that give jeans their distinctive character.

Dedicated to a cleaner and more transparent apparel industry, Federico Barengo breaks down the cost of making Garment Workshop clothes on his e-commerce site to educate consumers and help them make better decisions.
