House of Gold reimagines selvedge for the eco-minded
House of Gold, the denim company owned by Adriano Goldschmied, has created “an environmentally conscious” selvedge line, suggesting responsible products should be accessible to all, including the selvedge enthusiast.

The Green Selvedge collection includes hemp, recycled cotton and cotton alternatives and is produced using its Wizard process.

Wizard uses Smart Indigo by Swiss group Sedo Engineering, which is created using an electrochemical process rather than a petroleum-based process. It uses only indigo pigment, caustic soda, water and electricity to produce its liquid indigo, resulting in a safer and cleaner process, according to the company, as well as cleaner wastewater.

The first fabric in the Green Selvedge collection, SE-01, is a 100% cotton denim dyed with Smart Indigo.

SE-02 is a 45% hemp, 30% recycled cotton, 25% Modal blend with “optimised hand feel that captures the authentic character of denim”.

SE-03 is 45% hemp, 25% recycled cotton and 30% Tencel. The left-hand twill and Tencel provides a soft feel while maintaining the integrity of a rigid style.

SE-04 – 55% hemp and 45% Tencel – is a 10oz blend that “takes an unconventional approach to selvedge denim” by being "less cotton dependent".

Mr Goldschmied said: “I am part of the generation that created the ‘authentic’ jeans in the 80s. Now I am bringing back the ‘authentic’ jeans from that time. At the end of the 80s, I worked with Japanese mills to recreate the selvedge of the 50s. Today the biggest point in our business is to rethink our whole process to make our jeans with sustainability. That’s why I decided to create a collection out of authentic selvedge fabric with a new concept of sustainability and reducing the presence of cotton by introducing new fibres of the future: Tencel and hemp.”
