Blackhorse Lane’s fundraising will help drive two fresh initiatives
UK-based jeansmaker Blackhorse Lane Ateliers (BLA) is launching a community funding initiative that will help boost its expansion into two new areas: prototype washing and creating a new material from offcuts.

The new washing lab, housed in its East London factory, will be powered by Tonello machinery and will become a place for brands and students to learn more about wash aesthetics, chemicals and recipes.

It’s 2,000 jeans-per-month output creates 1,500kg of denim waste. The company will process it onsite into a new material it calls Atelier Matter for furniture or interiors.

Money raised by becoming a ‘community member’ of BLA will help develop rooms in the factory for the two initiatives, and help buy machinery and employ people.

Mark Shayler, a sustainable fashion expert, said: “This will turn Blackhorse Lane into a talent factory that’s no longer just about making jeans, but about making people who make things and who make a difference, about a new aesthetic and an initiative that could have a significant impact on saving resources.”

Community members will be eligible for benefits and invited to the launch of the Wash R&D Lab, to be confirmed in the summer.

BLA founder Han Ates said: “Since the beginning of this journey, you have been supporting us and helping us grow our community and I cannot thank you enough. We would really love for you to play a helping hand in realising this goal with us.”
