Collaboration drives NDL's Hemp Denim
Naveena Denim (NDL) has teamed up Marmara Hemp, Lenzing and Jeanologia to develop a series of hemp-based denim fabrics for German eco-brand Tom Tailor.

The Hemp Denim collection born out of this collaboration includes just four references that are used for women’s, men’s and children’s items. The fabrics all contain around 25% cottonised hemp, with varying proportions of Tencel by Lenzing.

The hemp fibre is supplied by Marmara Hemp, which has been awarded Cradle-to-Cradle platinum certification for its novel and fully transparent supply chain.

At a conference organised by PV Denim Berlin presenting this collaboration, Christina Agtzidou, who is in charge of women’s denim design at Tom Tailor, said that the Tencel-blend fabric was a bit heavier and more suitable for a fashion-driven consumer whereas a reference made from a blend of BCI cotton, hemp and Lycra would have more appeal in the mainstream market. Tom Tailor’s Hemp Denim collection will be available online starting this August.

Speaking at the same PV Denim conference, Michael Kininmonth, business development manager for Lenzing, pointed out that “there is a real empathy between linen and Tencel, and we thought that Tencel and hemp could also work well together.” He added that Lenzing is also interested in hemp as a source of pulp to make Tencel.

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Marmara Hemp found that it is carbon negative, said
Denis Druon, CEO of The Flax Company, Marmara Hemp owner. “One tonne of hemp emits 1.2 tonnes of CO2eq but sequesters 1.7 tonnes of carbon, which means 0.5 tonne is removed from the atmosphere,” he said.

“It is important to work in collaboration, not in isolation,” NDL executive director Rashid Iqbal Nasir told Inside Denim at PV Denim. “My message is clear: please appreciate the fabric, the art, not just the price.”
