Bast Recast: ‘relevant and responsible’

The results of something of a mega collaboration between Lenzing, Kingdom, Naveena Denim, Endrime, Craftil, Jeanologia, Warp-Face and Officina +39 are due to be revealed on day three of the next (digital) Kingpins24 event, due to run April 20 through April 22.
The as yet unknown denim collection, blended by Naveena, was recently described by premium denim label Endrime’s founder Mohsin Sajid, who designed, cut and sewed the collection, as “ground-breaking” on social media.
According to a YouTube video posted by Lenzing’s Carved in Blue team, the Bast Recast line contains a mix of Tencel lyocell, modal and Refibra (a Lenzing technology which upcycles cotton scraps into lyocell fibre), plus 100% certified organic cotton and wet-spun cottonised hemp sourced from Kingdom in China’s Heilongjiang province. All thread used - “100% biodegradable” and made from Tencel lyocell - was supplied by Craftil.
After the covid-19 pandemic delayed the project by around six months, Mr Sajid personally involved Jeanologia to ensure that the denim was washed “sustainably”, he said.
Warp-Face’s studio transformed the denim scraps and off-cuts generated by the production process from waste into pulp, which was then remade into a type of paper for the collection’s hangtags and labels. Officina +39 used its Recycrom (made from recycled used clothing) technology to print the tags and labels.
Mr Sajid said that he was proud, honoured and “honestly shaking with anticipation” at the prospect of the “secret” collection’s official launch later this month. “Hand on heart”, he added, “it’s probably the best denim collection I’ve ever designed.”
Lenzing described the line as “relevant and responsible, a product for our times - a product for the great denim reset.”
