Chemical recycling consortium takes shape in Korea

The group comprises Korea Textile Development Institute (KTDI), chemicals producer SK Chemicals and sustainable fashion platform Art Impact.
SK Chemicals will make its SkyPET CR polyester, derived from chemically recycled waste plastics, available to KTDI researchers, who will use it to create new yarns. Art Impact will then develop fashion textiles from these yarns, to be turned into retail-ready articles for sale via its channels.
The goal is to expand the field of lower impact fibres by broadening the country's production base, with a view to increasing their availability to manufacturers, a KTDI spokesperson said.
SK Chemicals announced in late August that it had begun supplying local fibre producer Hyosung with its fully bio-based Ecotrion polyether polyol, made from fermented plant matter, for use in the latter’s creora bio-based elastane. It has also been supplying Californian digital manufacturer Carbon, whose client list includes sports brand adidas, with the same material, the company added.
Art Impact launched its own fabric curation platform last year.
