Brazil's cotton sector aims to 'conquer' Asian markets

Representatives of Brazil’s cotton industry travelled to Asia in November on a trade mission, visiting Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia.

Their aim was to present Brazilian cotton to international buyers, emphasising environmental and social responsibility. The Brazilian cotton sector has a traceability programme in place that can give buyers clear data on when and where cotton fibres were produced.

President of Abrapa, the industry body for Brazilian cotton producers, Júlio Cézar Busato, led the delegation. At the start of the trip, he said: “If we want to become leaders in cotton exports, we have to conquer markets. That’s what we are trying to do here."

Abrapa has said Brazil’s cotton exports in 2021-2022 recorded figures of almost 1.7 million tonnes in volume and of $3.2 billion in value, making it the second-biggest exporter of the fibre it the world, after the US.
