Celebrating our tenth issue, out now!

The tenth edition of Inside Denim is here, accessible via our digital magazine page for those who cannot wait to get their hands on a printed copy!

As acting editor Sophie Bramel writes in her opening letter to readers: “We strive, as do many voices in this industry, to take the long view, to keep an eye on what is to come, but also to zoom in on pockets of innovation that might one day prove to be not secondary but significant for the future of our jeans-making world.”

What follows this issue is a look at the comeback of colour in its many shades, investigating how methods new and old can help manufacturers flesh out a broader, even more circular, palette using everything from ultrasound for hydrosulfite-free indigo dyeing to the wider range of ‘waste’ materials and residues (including sort facility dust!) now being turned into new dyes and pigments for the market.

Fittingly, guest comment from industry leader Nicolas Prophte suggests that thinking both critical and creative, strategic and holistic, is required if businesses are serious about forging a responsible path forward alongside their supply partners, as opposed to making "reactive" decisions disconnected from realities on the ground.

We also chat with “godmother of denim” Christine Rucci, report from France on growing political support for local linen and hemp, discuss outside-the-box approaches to non-standard sizing with Decade Studio, catch up with fashion group Bestseller about how it’s been earning its sustainability stripes, discover how Epic Group achieved an unprecedentedly high LEED score for one of its latest Bangladeshi new builds, travel with roving denim expert Tilmann Wröbel to Sakamoto Denim in Fukuyama, hear why Cotton Incorporated has reason to be optimistic… and still more!

Importantly, while preparing issue ten we were deeply saddened to learn how over 40 employees of Turkish denim mill Kipas alone had lost their lives as a result of the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria in February. We have therefore dedicated space to considering the impact of this disaster on both people and place, discussing efforts to support staff and build back with other manufacturers including Sharabati, who notably told us that the denim industry can perhaps best support colleagues in Turkey by keeping the orders coming.

We hope you enjoy reading and look forward to catching up with some of you at Kingpins Amsterdam next week.
