Target adopts traceability solution for cotton
US retailer Target has chosen to implement a tracking technology for fibres developed by FibreTrace, and is working with Cargill, an agroindustry company, to implement the process.

The tracing solution developed by FibreTrace uses luminescent pigments that are sprayed onto raw cotton at ginning. The fibres can then be tracked and identified throughout the supply chain, the company says, and offers additional security compared to digital-only traceability solutions

After initial tests conducted on US cotton last year, 50,000 tonnes of cotton grown in the United States and in Brazil will be marked this year.

Transparency is an important part of the Minneapolis-based retailer’s sustainability and governance agenda. It publishes the list of its tier 1 factories and tier 2 suppliers for fabric, trim, packaging, textile mills and wet processing facilities. With palm oil and seafood, cotton is the material it most closely monitors, it says.

In Fashion Revolution’s Fashion Transparency Index of 2023, Target scored slightly above average achieving 37 for its overall score (26 being the average), it does however rate much higher for its policies and commitments.
