2023 a bumper crop for Aid by Trade Foundation
In 2023, the Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF), an international nonprofit based in Hamburg that promotes sustainable raw materials, generated €8.1 million in revenues, a 23% increase over the previous year.

Founded in 2005, AbTF manages two standards, Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) and the Good Cashmere Standard. CmiA has been adopted by 2,700 partners in the global textile supply chain, with Ikea the most recent company to source the certified cotton. The Good Cashmere Standard has been adopted by 54 retailers and brands, including J.Crew and the H&M Group.

Last year, the organisation introduced a new protocol for regenerative cotton specifically designed to support the resilience of small-scale farmers to the effects of climate change.

Commenting on the positive evolution of its standards, Aid by Trade Foundation managing director Tina Stridde said: “We are happy to be making an essential contribution to transforming how raw materials and textiles are produced. The results for 2023 show that there is great demand for our verified, sustainable raw materials despite the poor economy.”

For AbTF founder Prof. Dr Michael Otto, “living and labour conditions in production areas were improved, and soil quality and biodiversity were conserved through numerous sustainability- and innovation-focussed projects that aim to enable people to help themselves.”
