Cotton Trust Protocol prepares new dues structure
Momentum continues to be positive at the US Cotton Trust Protocol, despite challenging market and climate conditions. The voluntary sustainability programme that promotes responsible cotton practices recently released its annual report for 2023/24.

Land covered and farms enrolled in the programme have continued to grow, with a 31% increase in acreage over the previous period. Research has found that Trust Protocol growers achieve higher yields (14%) compared to a 2015 baseline. Regenerative practices are widely embraced by the Protocol’s members, unsurprisingly.

The organisation’s Climate Smart Cotton programme has attracted new members and now has a total of 1,427 farm entities, including 282 from historically underserved communities, the organisation said.

“To support continued growth and development”, the Trust Protocol is preparing a new membership model that will be introduced in 2025. The hike in membership dues (up 27%), only covers 30% of its revenues, it said. The new system will calculate dues based not on revenues but on cotton consumption, or volumes, and these are expected to represent 60% of its future revenues.

“This year’s report highlights both the progress our growers have made and the operational improvements within the Trust Protocol. We’ve streamlined systems to make participation easier for all and introduced a new consumption-based membership model launching in 2025 to support companies of all sizes in responsible sourcing,” commented executive director Daren Abney.
