A new take on jacquard in denim
Founded by Wayne Chiang, a textile designer, 496 Fabric Lab is Taiwan’s only denim manufacturer and has specialised in jacquard fabrics. High profile brands in the likes of Supreme, Acne Studios and Casablanca are some of the company’s many high-end customers that appreciate its intricate jacquard patterns and customisation options.

At PV Denim in Milan last month, 496 Fabric Lab presented a new series of patterns designed to be used for back pockets, a smart solution to add a special twist to classic 5 pocket jeans. “Luxury brands often come to me seeking differentiation,” the designer told Inside Denim, adding that “lasering and printing a denim fabric will not give the same texture.”

Whereas Taiwan is known for its focus on functional textiles for sports, Mr Chiang set himself the challenge to prove that it is possible to make luxury fabrics in Taiwan when he founded the company in 2012. Last year, he invested in his own looms, and no longer outsources production. The automated AI-driven equipment allows the company to offer faster lead times, which can be as low as 12 days, and minimum order quantities of 300 metres or yards, for products that are fully made in Taiwan. 496 Fabric Lab sources its regenerative cotton from India. It is currently seeking Oeko-Tex STeP certification to reinforce its sustainability credentials.
