Gap Inc. marks progress in 2024 impact report
The $15.1 billion dollar company has released its impact report for 2024 outlining progress made to address its social and environmental responsibilities. The group’s commitment to better practices “strengthens our business and helps us innovate in ways that create long-term, sustainable value for customers and shareholders alike,” commented Gap Inc. CEO Richard Dickson. The report covers its efforts in-house and with its 200+ suppliers located in 30 countries.

The report covers how the company is ‘bridging the gaps’ in four key areas, climate, equity, opportunity and inclusion, a clever word play on the brand’s founding quest to bridge the generational gap.

On its climate goals, the company reported that 98% of the cotton it used in 2024 was from sustainable sources (from in conversion to regenerative) and 40% of its polyester was recycled. Working with traceability platform TextileGenesis, the company said it had traced ‘preferred fibre’ in more than 82 million garments last year. Another highlight in 2024 was the introduction of European Flax Standard-certified linen in Banana Republic’s summer 2024 ranges.

In a takeback programme with ThredUp, the group said it had retrieved 848,800 clothing items. This system encourages consumers to send back clothes they no longer wear in exchange for shopping credit. Gap, Athleta and Banana Republic contributed respectively 6%, 82%, and 12% of clothing said to be ‘diverted from landfill’.

The San Francisco headquartered company’s P.A.C.E. and RISE women’s empowerment programmes reached nearly 98,000 workers in 2024. It said that 85% of what its ‘strategic factories’ had at least 50% of women workers enrol in one of the two programmes. It also noted that 99% of the group’s Tier 1 factories now offer digital payments.

The group’s youth support programme, This Way Onward, led to some 10,000 jobs filled by ‘opportunity talent’ since it was first launched in 2007. And on matters of inclusion, Gap reported that it had invested $290,000 in community programs in 2024 in partnership with nonprofit organisations.

The 2024 impact report, its 21st consecutive, covers Gap Inc.’s global operations for fiscal year 2024, which ended on February 1, 2025.
