Bluesign partners reduce impact - but rising waste is an anomaly

Bluesign has published its System Impact Report 2024, mapping the progress of its 900-plus system partners, including chemical suppliers, textile makers, manufacturers and brands.

In 2024, bluesign conducted over 150 on-site assessments at manufacturing facilities, offering an environmental performance evaluation, benchmarking and a sustainability roadmap. System partners are required to demonstrate continuous improvement to maintain certification.

For the fifth consecutive year, bluesign partner manufacturers have reduced the intensity of their environmental footprint across CO2 emissions, energy consumption and freshwater use, with an increased usage of renewable energy and bluesign approved chemicals.

“This report is not just about bluesign – it’s about what’s possible when the industry aligns,” said Daniel Rüfenacht, CEO of bluesign. “In 2024 alone, our partners achieved intensity reductions in CO2 emissions, energy consumption and water use by 17%, 14%, and  8% respectively.”

However, overall textile waste (grams per kg of textiles) showed an increase of 20% in 2024 from the 2019 baseline.  The values for textiles waste were 35.2g/kg textiles in 2024; 42g/kg in 2023, 36.6g/kg in 2022 and 29.4g/kg at the 2019 baseline.
