NZ Denim explores next-gen materials
Bangladesh denim mill and jeans manufacturer NZ Denim featured a wide array of denim fabrics made from innovative fibres at Kingpins NYC last month. Brewed Protein Fibre, a biotech fibre developed by Japanese company Spiber, was prominently displayed. Less outlandish blends in the mill’s collections included denim fabrics made from kapok fibres (30%), and naturally coloured cotton, supplied by Ackala, in green or brown hues.

Jute is another rare fibre to make its way into denim and casual wear fabrics. One fabric on show at NZ Denim was made from a 75% cotton/25% jute blend (pictured). “Jute is a bast fibre and can be an alternative to linen or hemp,” Najam Us Saqib, head of R&D told Inside Denim

He added that demand for kapok blends was growing. Japanese retailer Muji has featured garments made from kapok and is also said to be interested in the jute blend.
