Goldwin first to use Brewed Protein in denim

An ongoing collaboration between biomaterials start-up Spiber and the experimental arm of apparel group Goldwin, Goldwin 0, both based in Japan, has resulted in the first-ever use of the former’s Brewed Protein fibres in denim.
These protein-based fibres are the result of a proprietary fermentation process, applied to plant-derived biomass. Highly adaptable, Brewed Protein material can be tweaked and fine-tuned into films or filaments with various properties, depending on end use. They can also be broken back down into nutrients which Spiber can later reuse as feedstocks.
Though it did not disclose the composition of the denim fabric, Spiber did note that it will continue to promote adoption, development and scaled-up production of its materials, “in order to expand product variation and deliver products featuring increasingly higher quantities” of its fibres. The collection follow's last year's debut, which saw Goldwin 0 incorporate Brewed Protein technology in a two-piece shell jacket and trouser set.
This time, the denim jeans and jacket are available for purchase exclusively from Goldwin’s own channels.
Founded as a knitwear manufacturer in 1950, but today best known for its sports and outdoor performance apparel, Goldwin launched its very first denim range back in 2020.
