Finer Ananas fibres
At Texworld earlier this week, Vietnam-based Ananas was one of the companies pitching for an Avantex award (it went to Golden Eye and Green Worms). Company founder Dave Quach presented his novel farm-to-fabric set up. Ananas has access to 600,000 tonnes of pineapple leaves. “Pineapple farmers generate roughly one tonne of waste per month and need to find uses for it. Usually, they either burn the leaves or chop them into fertiliser. But they don’t use all the waste the plants generate,” he said. Ananas offers farmers a use case for their waste, as the fibre-extraction process begins on the field.

Since the launch of the alternative natural fibre a few years ago, Ananas has modified a treatment process which has improved the fibre’s quality in fineness and softness, Mr Quach told Inside Denim. “Now we can offer higher yarn counts, we can make 30 count yarns now and are aiming for 40.”

Ananas is a cellulose yarn that is a good fit for denim, he said, sporting a pair of jeans made from an Ananas denim fabric. He added that tests had confirmed the antibacterial and anti-odour properties of pineapple fibre.

The jeans on display at the company’s booth were made from 94% cotton and 6% pineapple, or 80% cotton with 20% pineapple. A Japanese denim brand has placed an order.
