CO2-absorbing fabric among Orta’s novelties

A fabric that absorbs carbon dioxide and emits oxygen, as well as a focus on European linen blends, were among the fabric highlights for spring-summer 2027 on show at Turkish mill Orta.

One of the themes of the collection is Detox Culture, drawing inspiration from nature, regenerative processes and the idea that consumers will seek comfort in natural fibres and processes.

As part of this, The Climate Tech capsule (pictured) features a fabric with a plant-based pigment on the back, which mimics photosynthesis, absorbing carbon dioxide and other gases, and releasing oxygen. “We are still in the trial phase, but the first tests are promising,” sustainability manager Sebla Onder tells us.

The collection also features a Cool Blue family that absorbs moisture from the body and wicks it away quickly, while a black fabric reflects UV light and doesn’t heat up during summer.

Linen blends are becoming increasingly popular, adds Ms Onder, who has seen demand for them rise over the past two years, especially from European sources. The mill has produced both rigid and stretch qualities with linen blends, and works with French supplier Safilin

The Back to Origin collection revolves around authentic, marble-look denims, one of the mill’s specialities as a 75-year-old company. This collection also features blends with Lenzing’s HV100, which mimics cotton but with the softness of Tencel.

The final capsule, Sweet Escape, reflects “little luxuries”, so wearers feel confident, but without extravagance. These fabrics include sparkle finishes, pinks, bright colours, coatings and overdyes.
