Lycra presents Ecomade garments as AGolde’s biobased products hit shelves

Working alongside Turkish denim mill Orta, US-based Citizens of Humanity has chosen Lycra’s bio-derived elastane for its AGolde brand.

Set to launch commercially later this year, bio-derived EcoMade fibre made with Qira will be sourced from annually renewable dent corn from Iowa.

The fibre is composed of 70% renewable content, and has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of Lycra fibre by up to 44%, according to the company’s estimates, offering a drop-in replacement with equivalent performance.

Sebla Onder, Orta’s marketing and sustainability manager, said: “We are thrilled that Citizens of Humanity Group, one of our respected premium brand partners, has  sourced this sustainable fabric for their AGolde brand, and we eagerly anticipate consumer reaction to this collection in  the coming months.”

To prove the equivalent performance, Lycra also worked with Pakistan-based Diamond Denim and its UK-based designer, Jay Mandalia, for a collection that shows its versatility in a range of garments, 7 Styles for 7 Days.

Helen Latham, Lycra’s senior strategic accounts manager, told us: “More and more retailers are having less designed in-house, so we wanted to show how it could work in garments. These garments have the whole story, with the bio-derived Lycra as well as regenerative cotton, it’s a package – it’s not about just the yarn anymore.”

She added that the cost of moving from traditional Lycra elastane to EcoMade is only 1 or 2 cents per garment, which some mills said they would absorb.
