Eggshell membranes play a part in new skin-friendly fibre
Pharma Foods International, a Japanese R&D company, presented a novel manmade cellulosic fibre at Première Vision Paris last week. Ovoveil is described as a hybrid fibre that integrates 10% hydrolised eggshell membranes into a regenerated cellulose fibre. “The company specialises in finding solutions for food waste,” Chie Azuma, manager of the Kyoto-based company told Inside Denim. The fine membrane that lines the shell of chicken eggs is a protein biomass resource, of which some 10,000 tonnes are generated yearly. The company has been working on this development for ten years, and has patented the separation process.

Clinical studies have found that Ovoveil has skin-friendly properties by enhancing the skin’s ability to retain moisture, a characteristic delivered by fabrics with 30% ovoveil fibre. “It is ideal for skin close clothing, and has been used in the weft of jeans,” she said.

The fibres and fabrics shown on the booth were developed with industrial partners in Japan.
