Denim Deal pilot delivers actionable insights
The Denim Deal has successfully finalised a pilot project in the Netherlands, its home country, bringing new system-level insights in support of its goal to increase post-consumer waste in jeans. The pilot was led by Stichting UPV Textiel, a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), with industrial partners across the entire value chain. Sympany and Cibutex enabled the sorting of post-consumer textiles collected in the Netherlands. Frankenhuis handled fibre opening and recycling. Spinning Jenny and Bossa transformed the recycled fibres into yarns and fabrics for local denim brand Garcia. Reverse Resources and TexRoad provided data analysis of the entire process.

The main purpose of the pilot was to capture measurable insights intro three critical stages of the plan to scale circular denim: the cost of each stage of processing; the logistics of working with post-consumer waste; and the technical performance of the fibre, notably the impact of various mechanical operations on fibre length and quality.

All learnings will be shared with the Denim Deal community to inform the organisation’s next phase, which is to increase volumes, improve system efficiency, and enable replication.

The pilot demonstrated how extended producer responsibility schemes can support innovation, identify barriers and ultimately achieve economic viability at higher volumes, the organisation said.
