Crescent Bahuman: ‘hemp is the fibre of the future’
Speaking at Kingpins24 Amsterdam via video in late October, managing director of Pakistan-based Crescent Bahuman, Rizwan Shafi, called hemp “the fibre of the future”.
Mr Shafi described how the family-owned, campus-style, vertically integrated denim company has invested heavily in hemp recently, following Pakistan’s legalisation of the fibre’s production on September 1, 2020.
Crescent Bahuman has partnered with the only Pakistani university in possession of a licence for controlled hemp cultivation, in order to explore cottonised hemp, as well as the fibre’s production as a raw material. The company is also currently looking into hydroponically grown hemp.
“I do believe that the transformation of denim has to happen,” Mr Shafi said, citing sustainability, technology and increased transparency as the key, driving factors behind this change.
