Lenzing hits a sweet note with Orange Fiber deal

Cellulose fibre producer Lenzing has teamed up with Orange Fiber, an Italian company that has patented the pulp production process for citrus by-products, to produce Tencel fibre made of orange and wood pulp.

Every year, 1 million tons of waste is generated by the citrus industry in Italy, according to Orange Fibre, a company that launched in 2014 and sought to transform the waste into fibres for the textile industry.

The Tencel-blended fibres are being made into a collection of fabrics that Orange Fiber will present to the market in October 2021, along with marketing materials, such as co-branded swing tags, that will help tell the story to consumers.

Enrica Arena, CEO of Orange Fiber, said: “Lenzing is an industry leader in sustainable fibres and we are proud to partner with them to create this new material which will become a valuable resource for the textile and fashion industry. This production model can empower brands who are looking for eco-responsible textile value chains.”

Gert Kroner, vice-prresident of research and development at the Lenzing Group, said: “By upcycling waste materials such as orange peels in our products, we are taking proactive steps towards a more sustainable future and minimising the environmental impact of waste. We are excited to support rising industry trailblazers to bring their innovative ideas to fruition.”

In 2017, Italian luxury brand Ferragamo chose Orange Fiber for a capsule collection.
