Another wave of Jeans Redesign denim

More than 230,000 pairs of Jeans Redesign-approved jeans have been produced by Hong Kong-based apparel manufacturer Crystal International’s denim division.

Crystal said the jeans have been created using 98% Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic cotton and mushroom-derived finishing. Completely without rivets, the jeans are therefore “100% recyclable”.

It further added that it had employed “advanced” laser technology, wet G2 (oxidation) and “alternative, environmentally friendly” chemicals during the production process, in order to “save as much water as possible”. Additionally, all chemicals used are compliant with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Manufacturing Restricted Substance List (MRSL).

In accordance with the Redesign guidelines, traditional finishing processes like conventional electroplating, potassium permanganate (PP), stone finishing and sand blasting were ruled out and the jeans have been tested to ensure that they can withstand a minimum of 30 home laundries.

With all components designed for eventual disassembly, reuse and recycling, Crystal also emphasised its clear labelling of the garments for easier collection, sorting and recycling.

The manufacturer said that it has already worked with one client to create more than 40 styles (and the aforementioned 230,000-plus pairs of jeans) following the Redesign guidelines and also highlighted its ongoing ambition and commitment to circular jeans production alongside its customers.
