Berto draws from an eclectic mix of inspiration
Italian denim maker Berto’s autumn-winter 2022-23 collection journeys through five very different themes, touching upon everything from Japanese-inspired, rough-to-the-touch denim to Mother Nature, a range which perhaps most closely aligns with the collection’s overall proposal (“empathy”), thanks to the more “sustainable” fabrics used.

The first theme, Iconic, is described as timeless, yet mainstream. Also “highly versatile”, the denim used ranges from salt-and-pepper-look, 100% cotton fabric to an unspecified comfort style. The moodboard-like imagery which accompanies the line features denim-clad icons Clint Eastwood, John Lennon and Julia Roberts, all wearing vintage shapes in classic indigo hues.

Another theme, Black Blood, is apparently suggestive of two inky “souls”. One black is achieved with overdyed sulphur (“for a washed and aggressive look”), the other made using a reactive black weft to give an impression of elegance and sophistication, the company said. For a more intense black effect, Berto is also offering several overdyed reactive denims for the season.

Key to Everyday Plush, the third theme in the collection, are the manufacturer’s “cashmere denim” (intended to give the same effect as a “warm hug”), “soapy denim” (a cotton and viscose blend with a soft and fluid hand-feel) and a type of denim formed from cotton mixed with nylon, which reportedly edges the fabric closer to a technical textile, given what Berto described as its stretch performance, lightness and softness.

Japan Calling (pictured) has a rougher hand-feel, complete with the “authentic” aesthetic of “true” Japan-made denim. Structured weaves, 100% cotton fabrics and “special” blends featuring a wood-based, Tencel-derived slubby interior weft combined with a rougher, less fluid outer warp all make an appearance in this capsule.

Finally, Mother Nature is Berto’s “most” green-minded out of the five themes presented. Heavy use of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified cotton and Global Recycled Standard (GRS)-certified recycled cotton (made from regenerating the company’s own production waste) point to the company’s capabilities in the sustainability sphere.
